"The Office" is, to say the least, pretty hilarious. Its humor, cast, and story are relatable. Like many others, I found myself addicted. I was obsessed with this show for over a year, watching and rewatching.
Although I haven't watched "The Office" again in over a year now, I still have a strong appreciation for the humor because of how much I connected to it and how much it made me laugh till I cried.
Very few shows have successfully and consistently gotten me to laugh out loud, so I'm impressed when I find one that does. Cue the amazing "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."
I had no idea that this show even existed until it was canceled earlier this year. After the news of the cancellation, the internet went into a frenzy; this ultimately saved "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," which was picked up by NBC.
When it started getting all of this attention, I began to take notice. Of course, I already have a decent "to-watch" list that I've been putting off, but I decided to move "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" to the top (since it's on Hulu, and I was getting sick of everything on Netflix).
After I watched the first episode, I knew I had struck gold. It's hilarious. I figured I'd like it just based on some of the cast — Terry Crews and Andy Samberg — but I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I do.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" has a very similar childish humor which parallels that of "The Office." Even some of the characters from each of the shows have similar personality types or purposes.
For example, Samberg's character is very similar to that of Michael Scott. However, Jake Peralta masks his intelligence with childish behavior, while Michael Scott is simply childish with no hidden intelligence or wisdom.
Also, instead of being put in the role of "boss," Peralta is just another one of the detectives under another character, Captain Holt. Therefore, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," instead of focusing on what a childish boss would be like, centers around the chaos of having a childish employee or coworker.
The tone, style, and storyline feel very close to "The Office" as well; however, there are a few scenes throughout each episode of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" that juxtapose most of the main scenes that are shot in the precinct (an office setting).
These odd scenes are usually intense fighting or actions sequences. Instead of feeling out of place, this makes the show a bit more exciting than something like "The Office" — which is solely set in the confines of an office building.
"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is set in New York City, and the main characters are mostly detectives — with a few exceptions. While most of the plot focuses on Peralta, there is often an alternative plot that centers around a few of the other detectives.
This is a classic and especially hilarious, TV show that deserves as much recognition and attention as it can get; I hope you chose to give it a chance.
