Dear Brock Turner,
I would like to first start out by saying that I will not be giving you the justice that the news reporters have been giving you by using your well-dressed good-boy year book picture, and I'll be using your mugshot picture like you deserve. I also will not be including your swim records, as if your athletic talent completely cancels out the fact that you are a criminal, and an extremely heartless one at that. I am sick and tired of the media treating you like someone who just made a simple mistake and since you're a rich, white, all-star swimmer, none of your actions have any consequences. News flash, that's not how life works.
I myself am a survivor of sexual assault and I know just how horrid and draining it is. I have no remorse for you. Every single thing that comes to you, you deserve plus some. Reading the letter your father wrote to the judge about how sad you are and how you have trouble eating quite frankly made me laugh. You are probably one of the biggest pansies I have ever heard of in my life by trying to make yourself look like the victim in this situation. I don't think you or your family realizes just how much a survivor is impacted by being assaulted. Every single day we relive our attack. We are constantly being cautious in hopes that we will never have to go through another attack again. We have to deal with being victim shamed, just like your friend and father did. I could go on and on about how different life is for a sexual assault survivor all because of heartless, disgusting people like yourself.
You think six months in prison is going to impact your life beyond return? I highly doubt it, but I hope to God it does. Assault survivors will go their whole entire life without fully recovering. And hey, what's so bad about jail? Being raped? Funny because that's what females fear every single day. Maybe try putting yourself in someone else's shoes for a moment. Imagine being taken advantage of while you are completely helpless and then being blamed for it. Being stripped of "my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice." Sound familiar?
My reason for writing this is in hopes that you realize your wrongdoings and never make that mistake again. This case has brought so much awareness to sexual assault the the effect it has on victims, and that is one thing I am glad about. Hopefully this case will start a new era of fixing rape culture and will spread familiarity to this problem that is all too common. You got extremely lucky with this disgustingly lenient sentence but thanks to you, there is a better chance of rapists finally having to pay for their actions and its consequences.
