Even though I hate to say it, it's true. After serving only 3 months of his laughable 6 month sentence, former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner will be released Friday, September 2nd from the Santa Clara County Jail. Now, if you somehow don't know about all this, then allow me to enlighten you. Back in January, Stanford University student Brock Turner was arrested after raping an unconscious female after attending a party that night. On March 14, 2016 he was put on trial. During his trial, his father repeatedly told Judge Aaron Persky that, "This sentence was a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of his life."
Now, here's what I think about this. I feel that his sentence was based on white privilege. If this had been a Hispanic or African American male, then the sentence would have been much harsher. Now, I agree that any rapist should be sentenced harshly. But apparently a white, male, athlete at a top university should not be judged as harshly as someone else. Well, let me tell you something, RAPE IS STILL RAPE! It does not matter at all!
Did you know that Martha Stewart spent more time in jail than a rapist? How does that make you feel? It makes me feel that our system is corrupt, and that more people are getting away with horrible things these days. And what shocks me the most is that judge Aaron Persky did not follow his own mind, but instead listened to the father who would do anything to keep his son out of jail. So, even though this is one of my first articles, it should still show people that a convicted rapist is getting out of prison after only 3 months of jail time. How does this make you feel?
