The Broccoli Tree

To share something is to risk losing it.

The story of the Broccoli Tree, a once a well-loved piece of Vättern, Sweden, is one that is, sadly, becoming more and more common. In this video from the Vlogbrothers Youtube channel, Hank Green recounts the its story. It started with a photograph of the tree, taken by a man who passed by it on a regular basis. He was struck by the tree's resemblance to a giant stalk of broccoli sticking up out of the ground. One day, he took an un-staged photo of the tree and posted it to Instagram. That's when everything changed.

The tree became a social media icon as the photographer continued to upload snapshots of the scenery surrounding it. The tree had its own Instagram account with thousands of followers. Travelers took time out of their trips to go and see the Broccoli Tree. Soon, the man that took the first photo soon found himself taking pictures of people taking pictures of the tree.

The story of the tree got lots of attention. The tragedy of this scenario and ones like it is that there are some people out there who won't to take some of that attention and put it on themselves. Whether it's an issue with their own self-esteem or something else entirely, they allow the bitterness that forms in their hearts to dictate their actions.

One day, their was something noticeably different about the Broccoli Tree. Upon closer inspection, someone had decided to deprive the world of something that had been bringing people together for years. In the Vlogbrothers video, Hank states, "To share something is to risk losing it."

However, he goes on to point out that, if the original photographer had never shared that initial image of the tree on Instagram and connected with people that shared his same love of the Broccoli Tree, he would have been alone in his feelings of loss, instead of having people all across the world who felt the same way.

There's always a risk when you share something that you value with those around you. There's no way to tell how they're going to react, or if their going to cherish it the same way that you do. However, when you find your community, it means that you will never have to be alone.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
