The Best Broadway Musicals With The Best Messages

Music, singing, and acting have always been a huge part of my life. Ever since I was in third grade I started singing in my elementary school's choir and from then on its been my passion. I really started getting into acting and learning music theory in the seventh grade when I participated in my first show, Into The Woods. Performers and singers on Broadway have always been a huge inspiration to me, and I always leave the theatre wanting to better myself in my music career. Some of the shows I've seen have been really moving especially because of the messages they convey.

1. Wicked:

Wicked is definitely one of my favorite shows on Broadway. The music is incredible and breathtaking. The musical Wicked is a spinoff of the Wizard of Oz. The two main characters Elphaba (the wicked witch) and Galinda (the good witch) struggle throughout the entire performance to accept each other for their differences. They both end up becoming the best of friends in the end because they learn how to accept and love each other for who they really are. Both characters grew up in very different environments and very different cultures. Elphaba's skin color was green and she was always treated horribly by her peers even though she wasn't a bad person. Galinda was always the popular, and pretty girl and everyone always treated her like royalty. Both girls possessed many beautiful characteristics and traits that went unnoticed by each other just because they were different from each other. This is super important in our society today because we tend to discriminate against and hate on others that are different than us, but taking the time to get to know others who are different from us can be really beneficial because you never know what you'll learn or who your next best friend will be.

2. Come From Away:

Come From Away is a fairly new musical that I would really recommend. This show takes place during 9/11 and is about the planes that were in the air during the attacks and had to immediately land. These people who were on the plane were able to tell the story of 9/11 from their perspective. These people were trapped on their plane for hours before being able to contact their families and friends to make sure everyone was okay. Although this show is a tear-jerker, the messages are amazing. The plane landed in a very small town called Newfoundland. The people living in Newfoundland only had a few hours to prepare for this emergency landing, but the whole town came together to help these people they didn't even know. Everyone was donating food, blankets, clothes, and anything else they had to these strangers on the plane and some even opened up their homes for people to stay in. This show was amazing because it showed that our society can be very good and showed the audience that we need to be more supportive and helpful of each other, whether we know the person or not!

3. Frozen:

Surprisingly, I haven't seen this one on Broadway, but the movie was absolutely fantastic! It's definitely on my bucket list to see this show. Frozen is about two young princesses who are sisters who couldn't be more opposite of each other. They lost their parents at a young age and all they have is each other. The oldest sister, Elsa is very shy, overly mature, and has an unnatural superpower. She is able to turn anything she touches into ice. She accidentally turns her entire town into a winter wonderland and runs away thinking she is a monster. Her sister does everything she can to try and get her sister back and tries to help reverse the curse. They later come to find out that the only way to reverse the curse is from the love of your sister. In most Disney princess fairytales, it's the love of a prince that fixes everything, but in this case and in reality, that almost never happens. Disney shows that having a boyfriend doesn't solve all of your problems, but staying close to your family and the people around you who love and care about you is the most important thing.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
