Bring Back Old-Fashioned Sitcoms

There's something about gathering around the TV with family for your favorite weekly show.

I don't know about y'all, but one of my favorite things to do in my free time is binge-watching TV shows.

One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, I Love Lucy, Golden Girls, Friends, even Disney Channel shows such as Wizards of Waverly Place and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. I've watched some of the shows listed all the way through multiple times. And I'm sure there are other shows I've binged, but I've just forgotten them at the moment.

I don't exactly know why I love to binge-watch TV shows so much, but one thing I did notice is one fact they all have in common. All of the shows I've listed that are memorable for me and the most enjoyable are, for all intents and purposes, sitcoms.

While they also have subgenres, such as drama and supernatural aspects, they are all based around families, complicated and fickle, that must work through some dilemma or event in each episode.

Admittedly, Golden Girls isn't on the same level dramatically as other shows, such as One Tree Hill or Vampire Diaries. And while OTH and TVD may not scream "hilarious sitcom" throughout every scene, there are plenty of lighthearted, hilarious moments throughout each to recommend them as great shows to watch.

There's just something about each of these shows that made getting together with friends and family to watch the new episode extremely enjoyable and it created a sense of togetherness. And that sense of togetherness isn't particularly evident in today's society anymore.

Shows like I Love Lucy and Gilmore Girls have taken a back seat to those that don't really teach anything or cause us to experience all the emotion TV use to involve. I'm not trying to downgrade Reality TV, but it just doesn't have the same effect. Sure, they may be filmed in the lavish homes of celebrities, but they only really scratch the surface of life.

I miss the times when more families gathered around the TV to see the new episode of Friends or Seinfeld. Nowadays, it seems like we all go into our own separate rooms or grab our individual devices to catch up on our own shows, without sharing them with others for conversation and debate.

So much of TV today is just garbage, and that's including more than just Reality TV. I want more stories about real people that, at times, may seem more dramatic than real life, but they're what makes that character special. I want shows I can show to my family and friends; ones where I won't have to worry about how many curse words may be in it or what kind of lessons they'll teach the next generation.

We need to bring back these types of shows for our viewing enjoyment, but also so future generations can see we haven't completely lost our sense of home and self.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
