Warning: Some minor spoilers for Marvel's "Infinity War" ahead!
With the recent upcoming of "Avengers: Endgame," people seemed ready to welcome the hero who could defeat Thanos. After all, religious viewers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wanted to see the snapped characters they dearly love come back to the full screen again. However, gone is the happiness that was previously seen with the reveal of Captain Marvel in the post-credit scene of "Infinity War." Now, fans and casual movie-watchers alike are becoming infuriated with the character and the actor for Captain Marvel, Brie Larson.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, a website where critics and casual movie-goers can rate and review movies, the unreleased movie has drastically dropped in 'Want to See' percentage. Instead, an increase in the number of negative comments has led to the website removing the feature to add comments on a movie before it has been released.
The question is, what exactly has caused this controversy? There seems to be a bunch of factors leading into it, but the main two statements on the forefront of the controversy come from Brie Larson and Kevin Feige (the President of Marvel Studios).
In an interview with Cosmicbook.news, Feige had stated that Captain Marvel is "one of the most powerful characters in the comics" and will be "the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe." This statement did not sit well for many long-time Marvel comic book fans. Fans became upset at this statement as this statement isn't exactly true, with other characters being more powerful than Captain Marvel, especially in the comic books. His statement has also caused others to believe that the character will appear very over-powered, taking away from the suspense and tense atmosphere of "Avengers: Endgame."
Brie Larson hadn't helped the ratings of "Captain Marvel," though. Earlier last year, Larson faced controversy over the fact that she did not smile in promotional pictures for the movie. In response to this, Larson stated that female superheros shouldn't have to smile all the time, as male superheros are allowed to remain stoic in their promotional art. She is also a proclaimed feminist, which has caused issues as many fans believe that she does not want people who identify as males to support the movie. These statements are not true, however, and seem to just be people misinterpreting her words.
It is unsure right now as to how this controversy will impact the audience turnout of "Captain Marvel", but audiences will just have to wait until March 8th to see.
