How Brett Kavanaugh Will Affect Girls Everywhere

The issue that truly showed the nature of our political system.

I find the fact that Brett Kavanaugh has just been sworn in to be a Supreme Court judge to be horrifying and disappointing. I understand that every American citizen is innocent until proven. I also am aware that we will probably never know what actually happened between Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford. What do I think about the fact that we will never know what happened? That it doesn't matter.

There's already a stigma in this country about sexual assault. One in five women will be sexually assaulted. This statistic is higher for females on college campuses. Only about 30% of sexual assaults are reported, and most of the offenders will not get any jail time. These statistics are already devastating, and this case can only make things worse.

Dr. Ford risked her reputation by standing up for herself and sharing her story. This is all she will be known for now. She will be dealing with hate and criticism the rest of her life for this. And where will Brett Kavanaugh be? On the highest court in the nation making the most influential decisions. I don't care if this assault happened when he was 17. He is who he is. I see a huge problem with this.

Many people have questioned why she is only coming forward now. They say it is for the publicity. Why would she want to be known for this? I personally think she did this to try and save our country. Why would we want someone who is capable of such a horrible action to be in charge of our country? She was trying to help us. I understand he might not have done this, but I see no justified reason why she would make a false claim like this. I believe her.

This case will impact girls throughout the country. This man has gotten away with what he has done and will now be leading our country. Dr. Ford is accused of being a liar. Why would any girl believe in the judicial system after this? I know I sure wouldn't. With the reporting rate of sexual assaults already so low, I'm so scared of how much smaller it can get. If this happens, there will be horrible men walking the streets, girls too scared to come forward and obtaining no justice, and a corrupt society. Women have been oppressed like this for years, and something needs to be done to stop it.

I am disappointed in our country. I do not want my country to be led by a man who sexually assaults a woman. I don't understand how the Senate members could ignore their constituents and vote for this man to represent us. It is not conceivable to me that people had to fight to not have a sexual assaulter on a supreme court. I have no words to the fact that these people did not win.

I am shocked, angry, and sad. I am so scared to see how this will impact our country.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
