A Brenau Horror Story

American Horror Story just got a whole lot scarier for Brenau students.

So if you're watching American Horror Story season 6 like everyone else in the English-speaking world, you'll know that this season seems to center around Roanoke.

To provide some context: Roanoke was a colony founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in present day North Carolina in the late 16th century. When Governor White went back to England, he left 115 colonists behind. They were instructed to leave some sort of indication of where they went if they left and to draw a Maltese cross if they ran into any trouble.

When White returned, there was no sign of the colonists, and the colony had been dismantled. The only clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a fence post.

Croatoan Island was nearby, and White took this carving to mean that the colonists had planned to venture there. However, he was unable to make the voyage from Roanoke to the Croatoan, because a storm derailed him and sent him on his way back to England.

What happened to the colonists who disappeared remains a mystery (though there are many theories).

Now, how does this relate to a small, private women's college in Gainesville, Georgia?

Well, for one: the physical similarity of the house that was featured in the first episode of AHS to Brenau's Pearce. Seriously:

I might have brushed this off as little more than a coincidence, if Brenau did not house the Dare Stones.

The Dare Stones -- or rather, THE Dare Stone (as all the others are mainly believed to be fraudulent) -- is a 21 pound stone that was found in a North Carolina swamp by a Californian man, who gave the stone over to Emory University's history department. The stone is inscribe with a message from Eleanor Dare, updating some of what happened to the remaining colonists who later disappeared, including the death of her own husband and daughter.

Brenau acquired the Dare Stones when they were purchased by then President, H.J. Pearce. His son, Haywood Pearce, Jr., was at Emory when the Californian deposited the stone there, and he encouraged his father to purchase the stone.

Ever since then, Brenau has been in possession of the Dare Stones, which have been stored in various places on campus -- one of these places being Pearce. (The Stones, once all contested as fraudulent, were quite a scandal for the school for some time.)

Whether the similarity to season 6 of AHS was coincidental or intentional, one thing is for sure: American Horror Story just took on a whole new meaning for Brenau students.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
