Up until this year, lung cancer was the leading cancer in the US killing more than breast, prostate, and colorectical combined. That accounts for a whopping 27% of all cancer deaths. Now while there is more than one way to get lung cancer, smoking causes 90% of these diagnoses. Unavoidable environmental factors will also increase your chance of lung cancer. These include outside air pollution, or even asbestos exposure depending on your workplace. When combined, these factors can make your risk of cancer exceed 100%.
Smoking is costing you your life. You might not see it right now or even say “oh I won't get diagnosed.” But what are you going to think when you are sitting in the doctor’s office waiting impatiently for your results. Your anxiety is going to be at an all time high and you going to be thinking “I wish I could have a smoke to calm my nerves.” Then the doctor comes in with a concerned look on his face and diagnoses you with lunch cancer. You really want that cigarette now?
My mother smoked all throughout my childhood. Even though we didn't have the greatest relationship I still knew the risks of her smoking and I still cared. Smoking not only affects the person with the cigarette in their hand, but also the people around them. Your kids, parents, and even friends are all at an increased risk of having lung cancer.
When you walk into a store and buy a pack of cigarettes, you’re buying a death sentence. On top of that, you’re effecting the people around you not just yourself. So just think about it the next time you want a smoke, is it really worth it?
