Breathe. . . Today is a New Day

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Breathe. . . Today is a New Day
Brittney Wedlock

Ever get stressed? Start overthinking? Worry about the future? Become anxious about your next step? It’s time to take a minute and breathe. Stop worrying, take a deep breath and realize that:

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. The future is in your hands and no one can stop you from following your dreams. Nail that interview. Ace that test. Take that trip. Keep on keeping on. The future may seem scary, but before thinking about the rest of your life, think about today. What needs to happen today so that tomorrow will go smoothly? How can I make today better than yesterday? How can I help someone today? How can I make what happens today count? How can what I do today make my future better, even just a smidge?

Today is important. Every day of your life is important. You were placed here in this place, in this situation, at this exact moment for a reason. Everything you do matters, even if it doesn’t seem like it at times. Every choice made, however difficult it may be, matters, so choose wisely. Feeling like your daily events are important is difficult to do in a world that tells you that you are just another person going to another job at just another office, or just another student going to another class at just another school but you are so much more than that.

Today is an opportunity. Grasp the wonder and the irreplaceable things of today. Recognize the numerous opportunities available to you today. Take those opportunities and fulfill your dreams and follow the path you’ve always wanted to follow. Don’t allow the stress and anxiety stop you from living a full and happy life with the ones you love. Opportunities should be taken when we see fit because, in the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. So, take whatever has been weighing on your mind, fix it, complete it, lose it, and make yourself happy again because you are worth it.

Today is a new day. Lamentations 3:23 says, “His mercies are new every morning; Great is thy faithfulness”. Today is a day you have never seen and a day that won’t be seen again. Every morning you wake up is a blessing from the Lord and you should use it to the best of your ability. Forget yesterday’s worries and pick up the pieces. Ask God to help you put them back together and live today as if it is the first day of the rest of your life because it is.

After all that you have gone through, there is nothing standing in your way to make today better than yesterday. If your life starts to get filled with worry, anxiety, and stress, grab your life by the reigns and remember that life only happens once. So live life to the fullest and don’t sweat the small things, because happier days are coming your way.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
