On October 15, 2018, I never knew that I would be sitting in my favorite study space and as I took a break and scroll through Instagram, I was heartbroken to find out that my favorite school educator and mentor, Mrs. Kenya Durley, have died from breast cancer. At that moment, my world came crashing my down, my heart continuously skipped a beat, and the heavy tears came strolling down my face in complete shock.
My inner thoughts to myself: "No, I can NOT believe this, it has to be a joke." My high school peers, the current students, and faculty of Charles R. Drew, and the community of Riverdale just mourned, shared their funniest and greatest accomplishments with her, and many more. Death is very shattering to us, especially when it is a loved one or close friend we lose, but I can say it also symbolize a celebration of life. We take the time to unite with our families and friends and reflect on the memorable times with that person we lost, which is what my community did with Mrs. Durley. Today, I want to take the time to encourage women as the whole with a creative acronym of why breast cancer month is important to me. Enjoy!
