Breaking Greek Myths

Not every greek myth you read or hear about is true.

Right about now you are probably just moving in into your dorm rooms or apartments. The parents have probably left and now you are unpacking and organizing everything before classes start. Once everything is moved in and you can relax it finally hits you. You are now a student at one of the greatest schools in the state. Green and white will forever be the colors that you will sing and bleed for and it is amazing.

One of the first things that I noticed when I was new on campus was that the school had a lot of people on it. Only having one friend on campus from my hometown, I knew that I would want to make more friends. It wasn’t until September that I decided to finally become apart of something and really try to apply myself. I decided to go greek and rush different sororities to see how the greek life would be. In the end I ended up in an amazing sorority with some awesome girls. So before you decide to believe the greek myths let me bust some for you.

1. There is absolutely no hazing.

During the recruitment process one of my top fears was if I did get into one they would have me. That did not happen. Instead the older girls were kind giving our pledge class advice and we even went out to eat. There was no having to go streak across campus or see how much you could drink. Also, MSU has a zero tolerance policy against hazing and doing so would put either the sorority or fraternity at risk.

2. You Are Buying Your Friends.

This one always makes me shake my head because it is not true at all. Not everyone in your house will be super tight and that is okay. Just like you, there are a ton of people with different personalities who go through recruitment. Once you’re in the house you can see that nobody is the same and that just like the real world you have to work to make friendships with them.

3. They Now Own You

No, again joining a sorority or fraternity is very time consuming, but so is any other club or organization you join. The houses are very understanding and will work with you if you have a job or something else you are dedicated to.

4. They Do Not Value School

People think that in greek life we do not care about school but it is the opposite really. Greek life puts education above all else. When people are rushing the houses look to see if they have a good gpa standing when considering them.

Just because people say certain things about greek life does not make them true. If that is what is holding you back I say just do it anyway. At the end if you decided that you didn't want to pledge it is because you actually went through with it. Even at the end of the day you can make some great friends from rushing!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
