Many Greek organizations have annual events, such as a philanthropy event or a parents' weekend tailgate. While these events can be very fun, they can also be monotonous after awhile, and you may want to try a new one. Or, your chapter can just have event envy, and want to host an event another chapter held.
Even if your idea isn't something that will happen annually, if it is fun to do just once, then you consider it a success. Walking into an event, you never know if it will turn into something that will happen each year, or something that you can learn from, and not plan again. Offering new events can be a great technique to break the cycle of the same events every year.
Planning an event that has never been held before may be scary, but it is doable. If you have a great idea, talk to your sisters or brothers and see if they are interested. Even if one person says no, if you have people saying yes, go ahead and start getting a baseline down for the event.
Outside of wondering if people will like and support your idea, actually planning the event can be intimidating. If you aren't sure which direction to take, or how much food to order, contact other chapters who have thrown the same event, or look for smaller scaled events on the internet. Starting from scratch can be hard, but with hard work it is not impossible.
If you have a great idea, don't be afraid to try and start a new tradition for your chapter. It may take a lot of time and planning, but seeing your event flourish is a great feeling. You will be adding something to your chapter, and showing your sisters/brothers that you have the ability to bring something new to the table. Just think, someone had to be the first one to plan your campus-wide philanthropy event, so why not be that person?
