Break is Just Around the Corner

Break is Just Around the Corner

It’s the final stretch. With only a few weeks left until school’s out for the semester and Thanksgiving break in a week, things are starting to get pretty hectic. Schoolwork is beginning to pick up at an incredibly fast pace as meetings and holiday parties pop up every day. Everyone is stressed and wanting the semester to be over with as soon as possible because they desperately are in need of a break. Spending hours at one of the libraries or the MLC is a daily task while you’re still trying to balance a crazy social life. Everything is coming at you at once, and emotions are running high with each project, paper and test that is scheduled to be due in just a few short weeks.

But it’s okay. Know you are not alone in this last push for the holiday breaks. College students, we are in this together. Even in the hectic life that is brought to us this time of the year, there are good times to be had. Finals can be one of the most fun times in your college career believe it or not.

With everyone studying together in study rooms or desperately trying to keep quiet on the fourth floor of the MLC, know you are surrounded by friends. These are friends who are all slowly going crazy after hours upon hours of studying. In these crazy times, is when I personally have had some of the best memories from college. The “you’re all in this together” attitude is truly a real fact when suffering through studying for finals with your friends.

My freshman year in the MLC my friends and I kept the same study room for at least three days straight. We created a system where we had at least two people in there at all times. Study rooms are hard to come by when finals week rolls around, so we thought we would just never leave our “room of productivity.” Then, last year, one of my roommates and I had stayed at the MLC from 4 in the afternoon until 2 a.m. the next morning. When we began to walk out, we had gone a little crazy and took off our shoes and slid back and forth on the stairs of the MLC. Then, we decided to see how far we could slide down the hallway, and people would watch us fly across the floor going from side to side.

Even though studying is awful, the friends that surround you while you study can help you make memories of a lifetime while suffering through finals week. Don’t stress too much because you’re almost done! This is the final push but make sure to have fun in even the hectic mess of finals.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
