If there is a country taking over the internet, I'd bet all I have on Brazil. I feel proud our pop culture is entering the international mainstream and our icons are getting to be known on so many levels. Of course we are also known now for some embarrassing things, but it's a new era to receive all this sober attention. So let's wrap up our recent hits!
1. Memes
We make memes for everything. They are a sort of artistic expression for us Brazilians, and we use them to mock politics, our friends and to laugh at the things that are not going well for us. Some of our pop culture items are perfect for our works of art, and they started to be used by Americans this year!
Yup, the crocodile woman is from an old Brazilian TV show - her name is Cuca btw.
2. Anitta
Not only an amazing singer and artist, Anitta has been making collabs with Major Lazer (Sua Cara) and Iggy Azalea (Switch), beginning her international career and getting to be known in the US.
3. Pabllo Vittar and other drag queens
Brazilian drags - as much as drags from anywhere else - were part of a underground culture. Thanks to their activism and TV shows like RuPaul's Drag Race, their visibility and acceptance has been beautifully growing. As part of this new era, Pabllo Vittar and other Brazilian drags are making use of their charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent to conquer the world.
Also, the hit K.O. by Pabllo was lipsynced by some drags from RuPaul's TV show!!
Gloria Groove, Lia Clark and Aretuza Lovi are other incredible performers for you to check out!
4. Gretchen
Gretchen would be our queen if Brazil was a monarchy just because of how amazing she is as an artist - sometimes considered a trash artist. Her performance on the new Katy Perry music video can only mean she will create the Brazilian empire - starting with the US.
5. Pop music and funk
Do I need to explain?
Here I can prove it.
6. Politics
Now, the downside: Lava Jato, corruption, impeachment, Michel Temer and his blunders. Brazilian politics has been on fire recently, and the international media can't avoid talking about it. At least all this visibility heats up healthy discussions (something we most certainly need).
