Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Boston: Action in Art
Fight to Win Pro

As a martial artist, I try to catch up and stay informed on the latest in combat sports. Whether it be watching them in person and actually competing. However as a full-time student, interning for the summer, and taking a part-time job it has become difficult to stay participated. But that doesn’t mean I can’t spread the word of a few awesome events that will be held in the heart of Boston. There are going to two incredible events that are showcasing some of the most talented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artists in Boston. We have coming this weekend the IBJJF Boston Summer Open on Saturday and in just a couple of weeks, Fight 2 Win Pro will have its 44th event as well in Boston.

The IBJJF organization is where all of the big names of BJJ and submission grapplers go to fight. Each athlete can score points for themselves or their team to win top prizes in IBJJF such as team trophies and cash prizes. Some of the big names that are competing in this weekend’s event are Keith Florian who is a 3rd degree black belt and is brother to Kenny Florian, former UFC lightweight and featherweight contender. Keenan Cornelius will also be there who placed multiple times at the prestigious ADCC Worlds and is coming off some big wins after recovering from a major injury. Gianni Grippo, black belt under Marcelo Garcia, and is an extremely active black belt competitor and F2W champion will be returning to Boston to capture gold in his weight and the absolute division. For those who don’t know, the absolute division has no weight restrictions. Also competing in Grippo’s division is longtime black belt and fighter is Renan Borges who has met Gianni Grippo in the final, several times. Joao Miyao is also in Boston to chase gold. Rafael Barbosa Formiga is returning to Boston, he is a high level black belt and multiple time Boston champion. The IBJJF Boston Open is held at the UMASS Athletic in UMASS Boston (sorry, a little bit repetitive), 100 Morrissey BLVD on Saturday, July 29th. Best thing is that the event is free for spectators to watch! Have something this Saturday already, that’s fine. I have another event on August 12th in the Reggie Lewis Track & Field Center, 1350 Tremont St., Roxbury, MA. Fight 2 Win (F2W) is a leading grappling organization that is submission only. Some of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artists have competed in F2W such as Benson Henderson, AJ Agazarm, Garry Tonon, Caio Terra, and more. Fight 2 Win Pro 44 will be hosting a stacked card of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stars. The main event features BJJ black belt and Judo silver medalist in the Rio Olympics, Travis Stevens facing ADCC Worlds 2015 gold medalist, Yuri Simoes. Stevens is an accomplished grappler and achieved his black belt in record time. Yuri is a black belt under the well-respected Caio Terra. Also featured on the card is former UFC heavyweight title contender and the man who Cro-copped Mirko Cro Cop, Gabriel Gonzaga. Another Olympic Judoka and Bellator MMA title contender/fighter, Rick Hawn is on the card. Vinicius Agudo Silva, teammate of Rafael Barbosa, will face GF Team Black belt and professor, Robson Mau-Mau who has a lethal and ‘wicked’ kimura or shoulder lock that would guarantee a tap out. Rafael Barbosa and Renan Borges will also be fighting at both events. Tickets are on sale for this event going as low as $40 for general admission, so come on out to support your local BJJ fighter. Click here for more info and tickets: http://f2wbjj.com/events/f2w-pro-44/. If you can't watch in person, but really want to the event, you can get a subscription on http://www.flograppling.com/event/255546-fight-to-....It’s going to a fun few weeks for martial art enthusiasts, so if you can check them out, you will a blast!

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

student thinking about finals in library
StableDiffusion

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.

Christmas tree

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
