Whoever invented bras was seriously disturbed. Ok, obviously I’m kidding. Seriously though, bras can either make a woman feel like a wild sex kitten or like her “girls” are trapped in a heated blanket while they drip sweat. Is that too vivid for you? Well, get used to it because women have been a lot less shy about baring it all. Kendall Jenner has been outspoken about the Free the Nipple movement and even that word itself makes for a good point right away. People just do not seem comfortable saying or hearing the word “nipple”. One has to wonder why when animals nurse just like humans and the nipple is just a way for a mother to feed her child. It doesn’t seem like such a big deal when the word is mentioned in the context for a guy. However, that isn’t the point of all this. The point is to ask yourself whether or not the movement to wear bras less is actually relevant. At first glance, the movement seems to be some kind of feminist call for help. When looked at closely though, the idea of women freeing themselves from wearing a bra is actually addressing so many issues.
For one thing, it eliminates women wishing their breasts were bigger or smaller or just a different size in general. Women no longer have to worry about how men view their breasts because there is no such thing as a push up bra. Still, some women love to wear push up bras and enjoy shopping at Victoria’s secret for sexy, lace lingerie and who are we to deny them that luxury? No women should be judged for whether or not she chooses to wear a bra. I think the movement has more to do with showing women that they have a choice. Showing them that they shouldn’t have to be molded into some image of what is acceptable to wear in support of their breasts. If a woman chooses to not a wear a bra under her blouse, she should not be scorned for it. People automatically assume that a woman not wearing a bra is disgusting or some kind of sleaze.
This idea that women are not expected to wear a bra eliminates that problem in some aspect. It also desexualizes women, which is necessary in this day and age. Sexual assault is a major subject in the media right now and women are fighting back in many ways. One of those ways is to be equal to men in the sense that they do not have to wear anything on their chest. Breasts have always been a topic of sexuality and men are portrayed to be putty in a woman’s hands when it comes to their breasts. That image is quite honestly offensive. No body part on a woman should be objectified like that. With breast cancer being such a devastating disease for so many women, one would think that the media would stop sexualizing women’s breasts so much. A woman’s breasts are not what men fall in love with and they should not be a topic that is raunchy and disrespectful. It is like my mom always said when I was young, “Boobs are boobs.”
