On Monday, September 19th, 2016 Terence Crutcher, an unarmed 40-year-old African-American male, was shot down because ‘looked like a bad guy’ in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On Tuesday, September 20th, 2016, Keith Lamont Scott was shot down in Charlotte, North Carolina.
These are two out of what seems like hundreds of stories of black men and women across the United States dying at the hands of local police forces...and you all want to focus on the divorce Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? Two people that have no direct impact on your daily life? Why is this bigger news to some of you?
People are DYING. DYING on really arbitrary grounds and a reason--if not the main reason--is because they're black. Two cases of mistaken identity cost two innocent men their lives and fractured the lives of their families.
We all should be grieving together. We all should be enraged together. We all should be protesting together. All of us. Not just black people. Not just other POC groups in America and around the world. ALL OF US. That includes you, our supposed white ally who claims that they aren't racist because they have black friends or has dated or married a black person. You, the person who claims that #alllivesmatter. Where is your voice in this matter? Where are the people that criticized Colin Kaepernick's peaceful protest? Where are you now that you see his point is legitimate?
This is not the day to focus on celebrity gossip. This is not the week to focus on anything as mundane as another Hollywood marriage ending. This is not the year to escape from the horrors that you are seeing on your television screen or electronic device. This is the time to stand. This is the time that we need to stand together. I don’t about any of my brothers and sisters, but I'm tired of seeing this. I'm tired of crying out in the wind where it seems like no one is listening to us. Please stop ignoring this. Acknowledge that this is a problem and fight with us.
