In this recent presidential election, the citizens of the United States, born and tested, feared a setback in social progression. Women worried for their equality, and immigrants anticipated their jobs and citizenship being jeopardized. Among the many social and political concerns that came with the election of Donald Trump for President, what didn't present itself was the effect it would have on the relationship between fans and their sports teams.

With the Super Bowl right around the corner, football is the center of attention, and the players as well as the coaches and owners are being scrutinized particularly harshly. Originally we saw it with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick expressing his views by taking a knee during the national anthem in protest to social injustice and the political disagreements. Many fans were disappointed in this action because, although Kaepernick saw it as as act of solidarity, others understood it to be a disrespect to his country. By taking action in his own way, Kaepernick's popularity declined among his fans, and his teams popularity as well.

Previous to the elections, with Donald Trump claiming "the championship winning pair were backing him for president", referring to New England Patriot's Quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick, of course delighted some fans, but put many in a frenzy. In the Month of November, Belichick sent out a letter addressed to Donald Trump that was then read aloud by the newly elected president. When asked about it, Belichick confirmed their friendship, but ensured he had no political opinion. However, the damage was already done. When Brady was questioned afterwards, he claimed he and his wife decided to not discuss politics, and he continues to be tight lipped. Although, according to the Daily Intelligencer Trump quoted Brady in saying "Donald, I support you, you're my friend, and I voted for you."

CBS Sports exposed Brady's Facebook page and the anger his fans portrayed. One fan exclaimed "I grew up your biggest fan. I have picture you signed for me still hanging in my college room. I am ashamed and embarrassed for you if the Trump comments are true. I thought you were a better human being than that." Many comments such as these followed. As mentioned before some fans were a happy with Brady's support, however the fans hat were upset outnumbered those who weren't.

Being from Massachusetts, I see first hand how the Patriots are losing support. In watching the game this past Saturday, January 14th, I had my Aunt beside me rooting for the Houston Texans, encouraging a boycott of the Patriots. Although we aren't seeing a boycott just yet, it's hard to ignore the influence politics is beginning to have in all areas of our lives.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
