Ah, SpongeBob, one of the most beloved children’s cartoons that is still good today. Although it has been said that watching this show about the adventures of a lovable, yellow sea sponge can kill brain cells, many people of all ages enjoy it anyway.
That being said, I recently heard that this brain-melting wonderfulness is coming to Broadway! Who wouldn’t be absolutely enthralled by this occurrence? Or maybe some people are skeptical? I remember how excited I was as a 6-year-old going to see Dragon Tales Live. I was absolutely amazed! “Oh my gosh, they’re real!” I thought in awe of the people in costumes flying around on strings. I desperately wanted to play with Max and Emmy and ride dragons with them, it's not even funny. This is evidence that having a live performance based on a well-known children’s show can be a magical experience for kids.
Not only is there going to be a SpongeBob show on Broadway, but many popular and very famous, (not to mention extremely random,) musical performers are going to be featured in the show. One of these people include Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco. As an avid P!atD fan, this makes me want to go see it. But then, the thought goes through my mind that it will be weird, awkward and out of place. Then I remember that Brendon Urie is perfect and that thought is alleviated from my mind. But anyway, the list goes on: David Bowie is writing some of the music for it and will be performing, along with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Plain White T's, and They Might Be Giants. If this isn’t enough variety for you, you might need to ask your doctor if everything is alright.
This uncanny variety could be a good thing, especially if teens or young adults are being dragged by their little siblings to go see it. If they know a band they like will be there they will be happier. Will the musical variety appeal to a greater number of people? Yes and no. Some people who like Panic! At the Disco might not be Lady Antebellum fans, and they might not want to see it because of that. However, I think it is better to have an open mind about it -- you might discover new artists or genres you never thought you would enjoy! With such an amazing musical lineup, it sounds like this will be a promising show.
This random music lineup is appropriate for a SpongeBob production as well, because of how ridiculously random the show and its movies are. As I watched "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water," I was entertained, confused and freaked out. This just shows that almost anything can happen with SpongeBob, and people wouldn’t be too terribly surprised.
If any of you want to see it, it will be coming to Broadway in 2016 after premiering in Chicago's Oriental Theatre June 7th through July 3rd. Mark your calendars!
