The Detroit Red Wings are their most disastrous season in over 20 years, and it is not looking like they will continue their playoff streak in the 2016-2017 season. They are last in the Atlantic Division 10 points behind the Philadelphia Flyers who hold the second Wild Card spot. Anything and everything they have tried this year has not worked as well as they hoped. No matter what they do, they just cannot seem to string together a series of quality games that result in wins for them. If this season continues down the path it is currently going, then it is likely that the Detroit Red Wings will miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 25 years.
Although the season and the streak are most likely lost unless a miracle happens, a bright future can still become a reality for the Wings. Many fans won't like hearing this, but the only way to get the Red Wings back to being contenders for the Stanley Cup is to rebuild the team from the ground up. Now, this does not mean they would rid the team of their good young talents such as Andreas Anthanasiou, Dylan Larkin, Jared Coreau, Anthony Mantha, and Tomas Jurco, but to move out some of the veteran players and be one of the lower teams in the league for a few years so that they can get a few high draft picks to make the team both younger and faster.
A rebuilding stage is just what the Red Wings need to become an elite team in the NHL once again. Although it won't be a fun time watching them rebuild, it will be fun once it is complete and the team becomes a contender for Lord Stanley again. A rebuild is upon us and whether Wings fans like it or not, it has to be done.
