Boy bands are defined as a group of young men in their late teens/early twenties that write love songs marketed towards young girls. That is a weirdly specific definition that no band fits perfectly into. However, teenage girls are still fans of bands that have this in common. Something about being a teenage girl makes you a target for those who believe their music taste is superior. Boy bands are some of the best-selling bands of all time, so I don't understand the hate. Boy bands get as big as they are because of fans, whether those fans be 13 or 33.
Here are some of the most popular boy bands of all time:
First up, Beatlemania. Thousands of people (mostly teenage girls) flocking towards this British band. Branded as a boy band, and is now considered one for the best bands of all time. Is the best selling music artist of all time with 600 million records sold.
Next up, Jacksonmania. Thousands of people obsessing over The Jackson 5, after they released ABC and I Want You Back. Branded as a boy band, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and produced the King of Pop.
Third, Backstreet Boys (I wish they had a cool fan name). Best-selling boy band of all-time. Also one of the world's best-selling music artists ranked just above Prince and Neil Diamond having sold 100 million records.
Fourth, One Direction. Look, One Direction has achieved a lot. In 2015, they were the 4th highest earning celebrities in the world. After the release of their 4th album, Four, the become the first band in the US to have all 4 of their albums debut as number on the Billboard 200. Their 3rd album was the biggest-selling album worldwide in 2013. One Direction's Where We Are tour was the highest-grossing concert tour in 2014 and highest-grossing vocal tour ever. I am partial to One Direction. I loved them in 2011-2012, but this isn't be spewing fake facts. This is the real deal, and they are not only one of the most successful boy bands, but one of the most successful bands ever.
Here's what I'm trying to say: boy bands are exceptionally popular. Being a teenage girl, and a fan of music that is specifically marketed towards you is unacceptable to certain people. I'll give you personal experience. I have been a fan of exactly 2 boy bands in my life. One Direction a few years ago and 5 Seconds of Summer more recently. I have been told so many things by so many people in these years. "That's not real music!" or "You just like them because they're cute!" Those were mostly what I heard/still hear. I've come to terms with it. I know that I don't like them just for their looks, but for their meaningful lyrics. I'm a teenage girl who has heard music marketed towards me, and I like it. That doesn't make me dumb, and that doesn't make my music taste bad. That makes me a normal teenage girl just living her life.
Listen, boy bands are so cool and so popular and everyone should love a boy band at least once in their life.
