Everyone from Charlotte, North Carolina will tell you that the city has “got a lot," and I am no exception. Coming back for the summer, I quickly realized that there are some things I have truly taken for granted while living in this beautiful city. From the active social scene to the tranquil natural beauty, Charlotte continuously proves to be a culture of its own.
Charlotte is the optimal mix of a world class city and charming southern town. No matter your interests or personality type, Charlotte has "got a lot" for you!
Here are 14 reasons (out of thousands) why I am proud to call Charlotte home:
1. Uptown
Being the second largest financial district in the USA, Uptown Charlotte (yes, we call it uptown) is booming. Thousands upon thousands of people walk through the city center each and every day, filling up the many restaurants, parks, bars, and cafés. There is not a single day of the week when uptown isn't lively.
2. Lake Norman & Lake Wylie
Leaving the hustle and bustle of uptown, one can enjoy the beautiful views and waters of both Lake Norman and Wylie. The perfect destinations for a summer day at the lake!
3. NoDa
NoDa (North of Davidson) is Charlotte's historic arts district. NoDa is home to its own brewery, amazing concert venues, and hip restaurants and cafés. The active social scene of NoDa has attracted many young professionals to the area.
4. Carowinds
Nothing beats having an amusement park in your backyard. With some of the largest roller coasters in the Southeast and an active water park, Carowinds attracts families from all over the region!
5. National Whitewater Center
Charlotte is not only a large city, but it is also a mecca for those who crave adventure. We are home to the exciting US National Whitewater Center. Not only does the US Olympic team use the facilities for training, but it is also open to the public for recreational use.
6. Beautiful Golf Courses
There are more than 70 golf courses in the Charlotte area, many of which have won awards for their beauty. And let's not forget the Wells Fargo Championship held at Quail Hallow every year!
7. CLT Airport
CLT is a major hub for American Airlines. In 2014, CLT was the 8th busiest airport in the United States and 24th busiest airport in the world. There are hundreds of domestic and international destinations that are served by the airport every day. A very nice perk for any Charlottean!
8. Charlotte Sports
Charlotte loves its sports! From the Carolina Panthers to the Charlotte Hornets to NASCAR, there is something for a lover of any sport! The spirit in Charlotte during a major game day or sporting event is unbeatable to any native.
9. Tons of Shopping Centers
Charlotteans are very fashion forward, which is reflected by the many malls, shopping centers, and boutiques. From high-end and exclusive retailers at Southpark Mall to bargain shops on Central Avenue, there is something for everyone!
10. Active Bar Scene
Charlotte's nightlife continues to grow as more and more move to the city! With thousands of young professionals calling the city home, the bars and clubs are packed on weekends. Epicenter (pictured above) is Charlotte's hub for nightlife.
11. Southern Hospitality & Great Food
Everyone knows that Southern food and hospitality are unbeatable. What is also unbeatable to any Charlottean are the many authentic BBQ restaurants in the area, where the food and service continue to leave natives in awe.
12. Parks on Parks on Parks
Charlotte is home to many parks with tons of natural beauty! Parks can be found in the middle of uptown and out in the suburbs. No matter where in Charlotte you are, you can surely find a place to unwind.
13. Food Truck Friday
This is something that natives look forward to every summer. Local food truck vendors come together on Fridays to host "Food Truck Friday." Nothing says "I support local businesses" more than a nice meal from one of the many local vendors.
14. The City Truly is Royalty
Named after Queen Charlotte (the wife of King George III), the city prides itself in its rich history. There are many museums and historic landmarks found within the Charlotte area. Even as the city grows exponentially, the history is held near and dear to natives.
The Queen City is vibrant yet tranquil, large yet homey, and attracts both young professionals and families alike. Not many cities can say all that, so bow down to the QC!
