Trying to find a good new show to binge watch? A&E’s six-episode docu-series about young adults with Down Syndrome called “Born This Way” will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.

The show features seven people ranging from ages 22 to 32 with Down Syndrome. Steven, Elena, Rachel, Megan, John, Cristina, and Sean all convene at the Los Angeles community center, “Leaps n Boundz,” which serves individuals with special needs. There they hang out, play games, take cooking lessons, and provide a support network for each other. The show delves into the conversations that take place at Leaps n Boundz as they discuss living with Down Syndrome and the struggles that they face. We see them at their most raw, vulnerable moments, and that is what makes the show so special.

Not only does the show focus on their experience at the community center, it also features each adult’s individual story, including interviews with them and their parents.

Steven has Mosaic Down Syndrome, which is a very rare form. He is a bit higher function than most people with Down Syndrome, but he still faces many challenges. He is certainly the chill, happy guy of the group.

Elena is definitely a drama queen. She shares her struggles growing up, acknowledging that it took her 20 years to feel accepted. Her strict Japanese mother undoubtedly plays a role in her lack of self-confidence. Even just hearing the words “Down Syndrome” makes her emotional.

Rachel is the worker of the group as she takes pride in her clerical job at an insurance company. Her love for Adam Lambert is contagious, and she is avidly seeking a boyfriend.

Megan has a very close relationship with her single mother, who only identifies herself as “Megan’s mom.” They move from Denver to LA to help accomplish Megan’s dream of working in the industry. The show features very intimate conversations between them regarding Megan’s desire to live on her own and have children.

John is quite the entertainer. He loves to crack jokes and is pursuing his dream of becoming a rapper; he debuts his song “Shake Your Booty” on the show.

Cristina is very close to her parents and two brothers and is well respected by everyone in the group. She has been dating her boyfriend, Angel, for nearly five years. Watching them go on dates will make your heart happy.

Lastly, Sean is the self-proclaimed “ladies man.” He quickly develops a crush on nearly anyone he meets. He is also a talented golfer and has won many medals from the Special Olympics.

“Born This Way” shines a light on the Down Syndrome community and exhibits how they are very much like everyone else. It is truly a heartwarming show and good for the whole family! Head on over to A&E’s website, aetv.com, to watch all six episodes for free. I promise you will not regret it.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
