I'm always looking for great books to read to my class, so I'm sure other teachers (and parents) are too. Here without further ado are some of our favorites. We hope you like them too!
1. "Ninja Red Riding Hood"
(and any other fractured fairy tales by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Dan Santat)
We LOVE fractured fairy tales, and these are some of our favorites. Little Red and her Grandma are not easy targets for the wolf, and they help him change his ways. Plus ninjas are just cool! I also love the lesson here on how to deal with bullies!
2. "The Creatrilogy" books by Peter Reynold
The Dot, Ish, and Sky Color are fun and creative stories with characters kids can relate to. We read all three of the books for shared reading and we all loved them. They're all about bringing out the artist in everyone, never giving up and thinking outside the box.
3. "Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude" By Kevin O'Malley
This is probably our favorite book of all time.
I love it because it appeals to all my kids! Some like the pink, frilly, princess side of the story, and others like the monster fighting, motorcycle riding, ogre side of the story. It also teaches a great lesson about getting along, and working as a team with people you normally wouldn't choose to work with!4. "The Other Side of the Story" Series by various authors
Is a whole series of fractured fairy tales that tell traditional fairy tales from the POV of different characters. I love these for teaching POV and comparing contrasting. All of the stories are fun and entertaining, but my kid's favorites are Goldilocks Rocks, and Seriously Cinderella is so Annoying! My class understands POV because of these books!
5. "How to Babysit a Grandma and a Grandpa" By Jean Regan
These books throw a fun spin on how to writing. I use these as mentor texts for our how to writing unit, and the kids love to follow the example of this fun author and write how to pieces about slightly silly things!
6. "Tales From Deckawoo Drive" series By Kate DiCamillo
We have always loved Mercy Watson and all her friends, but this year we discovered that her friends have a series all their own! The characters we love like Baby Lincoln and Leroy Niker now have their own stories, and Mercy even makes an appearance now and then! The downside is that I hardly ever get to use them for read aloud because the little goobers always hoard these in their book bags!!!! Enjoy them while munching on some toast with " A great deal of butter on it"!
7. "In a Dark Dark Room and Other Scary Stories" By Alvin Schwart
This was my favorite book when I was in 2nd grade, and my kids love it too. The stories are easy to read, and just scary enough! Their favorite is The Green Ribbon! I also use these to teach about reading with expression! Read these to find out why our favorite quote is " And her head fell off"!8. "My Mouth is a Volcano" By Julia Cook
This is the book I use to help with all the blurting out that happens in class! It teaches kids why they shouldn't blurt, or let their volcano erupt, and a great strategy to help with that little problem. After I've read it I use the code word volcano when someone is blurting things out!
9. "A Bad Case of the Tattle Tongue" By Julia Cook
I hate tattling, and this book is a big help with that issue! It teaches the kids the difference between tattling and warning! I read this book a couple times a year, and whenever a kid approaches me with that look on their face I ask them if they're tattling or warning. Usually after that they just walk away.
10. "The Book With no Pictures" By B.J. Novak
This is our favorite book this year! This book was written specifically to make the adult reading aloud say ridiculous things like... "I am a robot monkey" "and "Boo Boo BUTT" and make noises like "Gluurr-GA-WOCKO" and "Ba DoooooooNGY FACE." My class absolutely cracks up every time I read this.
I hope you and your class enjoy these books as much as we do! Comment below with some of your favorites that you think we'll enjoy!
