During the crazy and hectic semester, there is little time to do some pleasure reading. Winter break is filled with weeks of sitting around and being bored out of your mind, so why not fill it with some novels.

1. "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott

If you haven't read this classic then you're missing out. It's perfect for the Christmas season and will make you feel every emotion possible from joy to sadness to anger. Louisa May Alcott's words will transport you into the complicated world of the March sisters.

2. "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler

Seriously you will not be able to put this down. Poehler gives loads of valuable advice throughout the novel that will definitely take you into the next year with high spirits.

3. "Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir" by Jenny Lawson

This may be the funniest book you have read in a while. It will have you actually laughing at loud at multiple points. Lawson's stories of moments in her life that she wished never happened is an excellent way to fill a gap in your winter break.

4. "Tuesdays With Morrie" by Mitch Alborn

Another novel filled with life lessons. Though it may be short, it is definitely memorable. This novel covers conversations shared by the author and his college professor, Morrie Schwartz, who is dying from ALS. A touching and heartwarming read that is worth your time.

5. "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls

Another memoir, but this one shows the struggle of Jeanette Walls' childhood. Her incredibly dysfunctional family, mostly her alcoholic father, cause much hardship and pain throughout Jeanette's life. This book is honest and powerful and will leave you with conflicted feelings as you meet the multi-dimensional characters.

As addicting as binge-watching shows on Netflix is, putting down a book can be just as challenging.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
