Books Are Literally Magic

Books entice us humans, but why?

Books. Yes books. The strongest source of magic on the planet Earth. Where people took dreams and turned them into a reality, with such beauty and grace. One may open a book, and may be enchanted for hours upon hours -- sometimes even days or weeks at a time. They may never be able to put it down. When the magic of that book is used up, the person just sits there, pondering on what has happened to the characters in the aftermath. Unless the magic was not strong enough to the reader, and continuing their mind to grow and carry on, but wiser and stronger. But the question is there, and it is a strong one: Why are books so magical?

Well for one, we could say that the reason books are so enticing is the plot or just the general genre of a the book. Certain groups of people are suckers for the romantic, sappy type books. Others are more drawn to Gothic-like novels. A level of a book’s magic, or appeal so to speak -- it could be leveled by simply the genre or taste of the reader. The stronger the taste of the reader has for a specific genre (or flavor), the stronger the connection the reader has to the book itself.

The other reason books can be so appealing is because of their characters. Book characters are so unique, just like you and me and anyone else here in the universe. Characters may be loved or hated. And if they are strong enough, they may stay with us for life. That is complete magic right there. It really is incredible, is it not? Well, to the most avid readers, the characters in these stories may sometimes become their role models or even best friends. Sadness may consume the reader for finishing a book or a series, and they may go back to reading the book just to see their old pals once again.

Also the setting. Settings are very important for a story to take place. The setting can be anywhere, and that is what makes it amazing. Books can whisk anyone off to a far away place, right from the edge of their seat. It really is marvelous. Settings that people may have never dreamed of, but the readers of these fantastical novels get to jump into and enjoy.

Sometimes, unfortunately books do not appeal to a reader at a point in time. But then one day, later in time, the reader may pick that "abandoned book" up. They begin to read. And suddenly, the book is something they can relate to. Something that speaks to them on a very close and personal level. Just like a song might or a speech. Things happen in life. Everyone lives through said things. Everything is an experience. Such as watering plants, taking a walk, or even better, reading a book. That book the reader abandoned months ago, changes just like the person. No, the book does not literally change. However, the deeper meaning in the text does. Like say if a reader got out of a book this lesson: "Love is strong." If the person was to go back to the book in a few years -- sometimes even months -- (maybe they did not enjoy it at first, but decided to read it again), the lesson may change to "Love is strong and it can and will change everything, so do not give up dear reader " (something like that). The book changed, and so did the person reading it. That is complete magic right there. Authors are in charge of this magical healing. They see things that a non-author may not. So they can sense how the reader is feeling. Some say that books are sometimes a better medicine for the pain and any other negative feelings than any medication and treatment a doctor prescribes. That magic is there, and it always will be. Books are here to help people through the thick and thin no matter what the situation is.

Books may help one person at a time. But that one person can recommend the book to another. And they would have a book swap. At the same time that would be the magic swapped with the people. Which could spark something huge. A change in the mind and the heart. Something that needs to be done whenever possible. Society may change it for the worse, however books and their magic can set it all right once again. They may call out on dystopias and how scarily close the “real world” is to that.

Books are sacred. They really are. They have magic in them, and are meant to be read and cared for. Not to be destroyed and harmed, as well as forgotten about. So go ahead, open a book and read it. Take note of its magic.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
