I read an average of a book every week. Although sometimes I have four tests in the time frame of five days, so I am forced to read up on pathogens instead of my choice of fiction. I know that after I finish an incredibly good book, or a series longer than three books, I find myself in a "Reader's rut", where I am not sure what to read next. For everyone out there that suffers from readers block like me, here’s a review of two books I just got done reading.
1. Wonder by R.J. Palacio - This book told an amazing story about a kid named, August. August was born with a deformed face, and despite his many surgeries, he still does not look like a normal boy. The story takes place the year August decides to go to a real school, instead of being home schooled by his mother. The whole book is about his year at Beecher Prep. We see August go through the school year, with all of its high and low moments, and are reminded of our own experiences. We are reminded of the times we were bullied, and the times greatness happened. This book made me laugh and cry, but it also made me think about my words; it made me think about how much my actions can affect others. I feel this book is a must read for people of all age groups. It is an easy read, but the message behind it is so strong. I give it an 8/10, because it made me re-evaluate the way I talk and act towards other people. It made me not so quick to judge others on their outward appearance, and focus on the kind of person they are.
2. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro – This book had a very interesting plot. It was told from the perspective of Kathy, but the whole book is a flashback. She can only remember certain things. I can’t discuss the plot much without giving away the entire book, so I’ll give you the short version. Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy all grew up together at a special boarding school called Hailsham. The only subjects they learned were the arts, and they were taught that they were put on the earth for a special purpose. The book is Kathy looking back, and seeing that their purpose has shaped every aspect of her life. I’m going to give this book a 7/10, and if it wasn’t for the ending it would have been higher. I feel like the author really rushed the ending, like she had a deadline and she slammed the words on the table. Besides the rushed ending, everything else was really good. The concept was very interesting, and the characters were dynamic.
