The book versus the movie

I have always been an avid reader; indubitably making me a firm believer that one should always read the book before watching the movie. I read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children a long long time ago and I was absolutely delighted that it was made into a movie, though I did have some skepticism because let’s face it- some of the best books get turned into horrible movies

*cough cough* I’m looking at you Percy Jackson movies but alas let’s save that for another article

The Book

Ransom Riggs's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children describes itself perfectly in its title- peculiar: a mysterious island, an abandoned orphanage and a strange collection of photographs.

After the horrific and mysterious family tragedy, sixteen-year-old Jacob journeys to a mysterious island off the coast of Wales where he discovers the crumbling remains of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an orphanage from World War II. *enter peculiarity* The children sequestered on the island may not have only been peculiar, but dangerous as well, and there's a good chance they might still be alive.

A good comparison of Riggs's spine-chilling thriller is to call it an "elementary version" of Xavier's Home for Gifted Children. Think of it as a more haunting and suspenseful version to the X-men series.

I give the book a 7.5/10 simply because thrillers are not my favorite genre though this was a good book.

The Movie

Described as an “unforgettable motion picture experience”, Tim Burton’s vision of Riggs’s best seller brings the Young Adult fantasy to life with excellent performances from Eva Green as Miss Peregrine, also seen in The Golden Compass and most recently gave an excellent performance as Ms. Ives in the wonderful Penny Dreadful, Asa Butterfield as the lead Jacob, who starred in The Boy in Striped Pajamas and will be starring in The Space Between Us, and the wonderful Samuel L. Jackson playing the villain.

In my opinion, the movie followed the book "perfectly" and I don't say that often about books being made into movies. I give the movie an 8/10 for being extremely similar to the book thought I envisioned a few stuff differently in my head when I read it and there were a few points of confusion.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
