In current times, most jobs are limited to men and women with a college degree, or at the very least something more than a high school education. 36% of jobs are open to a person with only a high school education.
Therefore, while in college the availability of a job is rather low. Besides the crippling debt that most colleges so gracious bestow upon their graduates, books are a silent killer in terms of costs. According to college data, the average cost of books during the 2016-17 year was more than $1,200 per student. The average tuition in college is also outrageous at $33,480 at private colleges, $9,650 for state residents at public colleges, and $24,930 for out-of-state residents attending public universities.
Considering the arm and a leg that tuition costs, not even including housing and food, books should absolutely be covered with such a large fee. It is, in all honesty, a ridiculous robbery that colleges charge as much as they want, but then refuse to provide books. A single textbook usually costs more than $100, but what is even more incredible is that many teachers do not end up using the books they requested. The only reasonable thing would be that schools loan the books and can feel free to charge if the book is lost or beyond usable and damaged.
