Book Butterflies

Escaping into the world of books, and why it's so important.

Getting lost inside the pages of a book is one of my mind's favorite escapes. The black and white print is actually filled with worlds of a million different colors. It's all glorious, whether it be the spine crack and crisp smell of a new book or the friendly, familiar feel of the crinkled pages you've read thousands of times. Good writing is beyond just something to read; it's something to live through, learn from, and immerse yourself in when you need to flee life for a moment.

I started reading at a young age as a very small book worm. As I got older I was more of a book caterpillar, and I believe now I am a fully grown book butterfly (even if that's not quite how their evolution works). As a book butterfly, I find ultimate comfort in reading. I encourage anyone I know to read, as I believe strongly in all the benefits it has to offer.

Reading gives people time to escape from life and enter new worlds of times past, future and imagination. Shared interest in books provides people the opportunity to bond and have amazingly stimulating conversations. Those who read enrich their own banks of knowledge, ideas and creativity. Reading helps comprehension and one's ability to articulate what they think and feel.

Literature has so many morals and lessons to teach. I've learned from the mistakes and journeys of my favorite book characters. Good books have made me love, brought tears to my eyes and smiles to my face.

The art of reading and writing is one that should be cherished. It is also one that some people believe is becoming a lost art form. I disagree with this to every extent. My debit card almost exclusively only has charges from Barnes and Noble, and judging by the size of their lines, I'm not the only one. I make it a point to visit every library and small book shop I can find. I am not the only one searching for these hidden gems. This world is not in the dark. The love for books has not dwindled. We may be in a digital age, but one thing I do know is that technology breaks and books are timeless.

My mother always encouraged me to read, as will I with my future children. Book lovers will continue to raise book caterpillars and slowly watch them grow into book butterflies. Don't lose sight of all that books have to offer. If you've lost the love of reading, stop at a library today and fall in love all over again.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
