The time has finally arrived. With Halloween just around the corner in roughly a week, Tyler Perry's Boo! A Madea Halloween was released in theaters across the nation on Friday, October 21. Press for the newest installment in the Madea franchise began in March with the release of the first teaser trailer. The official trailer followed suit in July.
Between waiting all year for this movie and the last installment, A Madea Christmas, being released in 2013, fans were anxious for the release of this Halloween-inspired addition to the series. It showed at the box office, with Perry's film raking in $27.6 million, beating films such as Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in the process.
Tyler Perry is a large reason the film is so enjoyable, as he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in it. Not only is his humor exceptional, but it shines through as he plays not one, not two, but three different characters in the film - Madea, Brian Simmons, and Uncle Joe.
While most viewers watch Perry's films for the comedy, Perry instills lessons in his movies that can translate to the real world. A Madea Christmas combated racism, with Madea's niece being married to a white man and her mother having to work toward accepting him with Christmas, a time for family and love, as the backdrop.
Boo! A Madea Halloween honed in on parenting, more specifically with Brian Simmons (Tyler Perry) and his 17-year-old daughter Tiffany Simmons (Diamond White). Brian also has a younger son, but he simply acts as a foil for Tiffany as he's only seen briefly and is well-behaved. Meanwhile, Tiffany has zero respect for her father, doesn't listen to anything he says, and even goes as far as to verbally belittle him.
Madea, Uncle Joe, Bam (Cassi Davis), and Hattie (Patrice Lovely) come over to Brian's to watch Tiffany per his request as he has to leave for something work-related. They attempt to give him parenting advice, but he doesn't want to listen to them because he thinks it will make matters worse. After he leaves, Tiffany and her friend Aday (Liza Koshy) sneak out to a frat party, and insanity ensues.
Madea and the gang encounter clowns, zombies, ghosts, and everything spooky trying to not only find Tiffany, but also in an attempt to teach her a lesson in respecting her father. In the find, it's revealed why Tiffany has been acting the way she has been, and it drives home the notion that communication is key in any relationship, whether its familial, friendly, or otherwise.
In the infamous words of Mable "Madea" Simmons, happy Hallerween!
