Exploring Your College Town: Philadelphia Edition

How to make new friends and explore all that Philadelphia has to offer.

Exploring Your College Town: Philadelphia Edition

Growing up in South Jersey, I’ve been to Philadelphia many times. Soon after I moved into my freshman dorm, though, I realized my roommate was not very familiar with the city I’ve always known and loved. This is how one of our first conversations went:

Me: “WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU’VE NEVER HAD A TASTYKAKE BEFORE?”

Roomie (clearly stunned by my passionate outburst): “….aren’t they just like Hostess cakes?”

That day truly opened my eyes. Evidently, in my Butterscotch Krimpet-filled bubble, I had forgotten that my beloved snack was a Philadelphia specialty. I then realized that introducing my new roommate to Philly would be a great opportunity for us to get to know each other. In fact, I was so dedicated to this idea that I dragged her to a random club meeting only because they served Tastykakes. Now, we laugh about that funny conversation.

If you want to get to know some Villanovans in a way much less awkward than your average ice breaker, invite them to do one of these fun activities with you!

1. Visit Old City

Philadelphia played such an important role in the American Revolution. From Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were born, to the Betsy Ross House, you could spend hours soaking in all of the history. Concerned about your tiny broke college student budget? Don’t be! Many attractions offer a student discount, and some, like the Liberty Bell, are free!

2. Go to the Museum of Art

Again, this is another place where you could spend a lot of time admiring the stunning works of art in the museum’s various collections. In addition to offering a student discount, each Wednesday after 5 PM and the first Sunday of the month are pay what you wish!

Still hesitant about spending the money on tickets? The good news is you can still experience a piece of Philadelphia without ever entering the museum. Visit the Rocky Statue and race your friends up the museum steps. Loser buys the winner a Philly pretzel!

3. Buy Made in America Tickets

I know so many people who really bonded with new friends at Made in America, because it is scheduled during Labor Day Weekend, right at the start of the Fall Semester. The list of performers is always super impressive as well.

4. Get an Authentic Philly Cheesesteak

Chances are, if you’ve ever gotten a cheesteak anywhere outside of the Philadelphia area, you did not get the real deal. Luckily, you can try them for yourselves on South Street. Pat’s King of Steaks, where the cheesesteak was created, and Geno’s Steaks are right across the street from each other. Try both and take a group vote to determine the superior sandwich.

5. Go to a Phillies Game

See for yourself: are Philadelphia fans as awful as their reputation says? Check out StubHub for a good price. Citizen’s Bank Park also has a Chickie’s and Pete’s, providing the perfect opportunity to sample their famous Crab Fries.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
