The body positive movement is a great beginning for the empowerment of women but, when does it lead to being unhealthy?
The idea of a perfect woman was curvy, but still on the skinny side and has not changed much throughout the years. The media has just now started to the portray "different kinds" of beauty in the last few years. We now see women of all shapes, sizes, and looks in photos and walking the runway, which is what we wanted.
However, there is a point to where it gets unhealthy. This does not just pertain to being overweight, but also too skinny and this is something that we need to focus on while still shedding light on the beauty of bodies outside the norm of "beauty."
The fact that we bringing to the table new beauty standards is something that should be applauded although, we there is a fine line between what is and is not healthy. Having a different shape than the glorified tall and lean and being extremely overweight are very different. This has become an issue today with wanting to include everyone we are overlooking the obvious signs of obesity and the health risks involved. Along with the being too skinny which is just as detrimental to one's health.
With this being said I am not at all discouraging being body positive or the benefits it has had on our community, but I think that we should be more cognizant of what we are congratulating. Instead of focusing on how we look, we should be focusing on what we put into our bodies and what we do with them. The hard work and good foods should be pushed to the front and shown throughout the media of what is it to be healthy and positive.
Ways we can do this are instead of focusing on the physical attributes of models, no matter size we should focus on what they DO to stay healthy. This would include working out, food, and mental health as well. These are the key component to living a healthy life, and that is really the most important thing.
