Body Positivity Doesn't Always Mean A Healthy Body

The body positivity movement is amazing, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Body positivity is a big movement these days, and that is a fantastic thing. Everyone deserves to feel good about themselves and their bodies. No one should be told they can’t wear crop tops, or that they need to “eat a burger or something.” I feel that self-love has finally turned the tables on the media and society’s standards for women. That is amazing for women and men everywhere. I think that loving yourself is one of the most important things in the world and one of the only things that can make a person truly happy. However, part of loving yourself is looking past the body positivity movement.

I believe that the body positivity movement often overlooks the health of people. Just because you love your body and encourage others to love theirs doesn’t mean you’re healthy. Of course, bodies come in all shapes and sizes on the outside, and in the same vein, all bodies are different internally, as well. I’m all for loving your body, but isn’t part of loving your body also being a healthy weight, eating properly and getting regular exercise? Of course, a “healthy body” has no distinct shape or size. However, the movement often makes it seem that if you love yourself, you won’t experience sickness or health issues.

For example, I’ve never had a problem with the way my body looks. I’ve always been a healthy weight for my height, and I've never experienced too many health problems aside from the occasional flu or cold. However, there was a long time I couldn’t run a mile without wheezing. I can now, but I still eat poorly when I’m stressed, I don’t get enough sleep and I definitely don’t drink a lot of water. I still love my body and I’m very confident in the way I look, but that doesn’t mean I’m taking care of it properly.

There are easy ways to start taking care of your body, and loving it, physically and mentally. Making sure to go to the doctor regularly is great start. Another option is seeing a nutritionist to make sure that any allergies or food sensitivities have been addressed. Another great way to keep the body and mind healthy is to do things you enjoy. Even if you don't like exercise, or believe it isn't necessary, you have every obligation to yourself to make an effort.

The body positivity movement is amazing, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt. People need to understand that loving yourself can’t detract from taking care of yourself, because they are one in the same.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
