Its Sunday, February 5th and you are sitting around a flat screen TV, over indulging in game time snacks. The room is divided by team preference between The Patriots and The Falcons. The National Anthem has been sung and the first two quarters have blown by, suddenly its the moment we've all been waiting for... The half-time show.
Lady Gaga, makes her grand appearance in a crop top and booty shorts. She hasn't even finished her set before the meme's started flooding social media. Americans are accustom to seeing photo shopped pictures, so Lady Gaga's real body took them by surprise. Like most women across the nation, their mid-section is not a set of toned out abs but instead a normal belly with imperfections.
The modeling industry has brain washed many of us into thinking that being "perfect" means being a size 00, composed of nothing but skin and bones. It's funny how society works because when you can't meet this impossible standard you are shamed, but when you get close to this, you still get shamed. There is no winning when it comes to body image.
Instead of being so focused on Lady Gaga's "belly rolls" why can't we focus on the awesome performance that she gave. Why do we think that it is ever okay to point out the imperfections of others. The number on the scale and the size of your clothing are not the only components that make you, you.
For someone being criticized by thousands, I commend Lady Gaga for speaking out against this. She posted in a recent Instagram picture,
"I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I'm proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do. I could give you a million reasons why you don't need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That's the stuff for champions. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. Xoxo, gaga."
It's time to break the bond with these impossible standards, and show self-love because at the end, your body type doesn't matter.
