Although this topic has been covered many times, I thought it would be important to bring it up again in light of recent events, especially for those who still can't seem to grasp it.
Our bodies aren’t “just bodies,” we are our bodies. Our bodies are our homes and they’re our transportation. They keep us warm and safe. They get us where we need to go and can take us to places we’ve never dreamed of seeing. They have landed on the moon and eventually, will make the trip to Mars. They are capable of climbing Mount Everest, bungee jumping and sky diving.
Our bodies make us get up in the morning, take us through our day and lay us down when we need rest. Our bodies are loving and passionate and intelligent and kind. Our bodies aren’t “just bodies.” They shouldn’t be over-sexualized, underestimated or belittled by “locker room talk.” They aren’t meant to be divided into categories and told which are allowed basic human rights.
Believing that our bodies are “just bodies” fuels racism, sexism and condones rape culture in a way that must be destroyed from the inside out. It forces people to disregard the human inside the body and solely focus on what the body looks like or whether or not the body fits into its cultural stereotypes.
Forcefully grabbing women with sexual intent, or claiming to forcefully grab a woman sexually, as Donald Trump did, is a way of viewing humans as "just bodies." It's treating women as if they're boxes of cereal on a shelf, open to examine, take home or leave for the next person. This behavior is an attack on who women are and keeps us from progressing.
For those who claim this is just "how men talk," I disagree. No, Tomi Lahren, this type of conversation shouldn’t be expected, especially from a presidential candidate. It’s criminal. This little thing we call “locker room talk” not only condones, but promotes rape culture in the United States.
Don’t vote for someone who views the people around them as “just bodies,” and don't blow incidents like these off as if they don't matter. They are a big deal and won't be recognized if we don't discuss them.
