Like a lot of college students, when the school year is over, he goes "home." He waits 3-4 months to go back to school and get his degree. Though 3 to 4 months doesn't seem too long, it's incredibly long for Bobby. Like a lot of places in his hometown, his house is a home to a lot of his trauma.
The same house where his father told him, "That's why you don't have any friends." The same place his father would manhandle him, a lot of times for no reason at all. Where his father made it perfectly clear that he did not respect him. In this place that was supposed to be home, there was one message that he was constantly reminded of, "You have no power here."
So naturally, when Bobby goes home for the summer, he tries to stay out of the house as much as he possibly can. This is can be hard for Bobby because all of his friends are at school.
His only real options are to talk to people at bars, which he excels at very well, or drive around town with no particular destination in mind. The problem is that they both cost money, which is something not a lot of college students have.
But what else is he suppose to do? He can't stay in the house too long or he freaks out but the only way he can really save money is to not go out. He is literally allergic to the place that's supposed to be home. Except that it was never home. Not really.
