Why I Chose To Be Blurryface For Halloween

He's scarier than you think.

Why I Chose To Be Blurryface For Halloween

When some of my friends were talking about their Halloween plans and asked me what I was going to be, I knew the answer right away even though I had given it no previous thought. I told them I was going to be Twenty One Pilots' Blurryface. My choice brought about a small chorus of puzzled "Why's" so I laughed and said, "I think Blurryface is a very underappreciated, complex character. I want to be Blurryface for Halloween to raise awareness for mental disorders. I think I'm going to write an article about him."

So I did. I customized my black Converse with my favorite Twenty One Pilots lyric, bought a TØP t-shirt, dug out my dark grey sweatshirt that would cover part of my neck (to represent the black face paint that Tyler wears when he dresses as Blurryface,) and put on my favorite pair of dark skinny jeans. I copied Josh Dun's eye makeup and added black, winged eyeliner. I put on a fake nose ring and wore a black beanie. It was arguably my edgiest costume, and came out way better than I thought it would.

Here's why I think Blurryface is so important: "Blurryface", to me, is not a single character or person. He is a metaphor for the universal voice that most of us have experienced at one point or another in our life, because he is the scariest part of our own mind. In fact, he manipulates it. Blurryface is present during the darkest times of your life. He reigns over your mental and emotional instability when you're at your lowest. He's the quiet that you try to fill, yet the loudest voice that you try to block out. Blurryface is the nagging that overwhelms your mind, and the gnawing presence you feel. He is your insecurities, your doubt, your fears and the force that drives you to insanity. He wants you to question yourself. He wants you to question your worth. He wants you to question your purpose and your life...this is why Blurryface is so scary. He reeks of desperation.

Some of us are barely acquainted with Blurryface. Some of us fight him off on the regular. He's unpredictable. But we only succumb to him if we choose to let him overcome us, if we let him become our mind. That's what he wants. He wants you to give him the reins so he can run wild and wreak havoc within you. He thrives on your weakness and your fear that what he says is true. So choose to be stronger. Fight against your Blurryface. Learn to recognize his lies.

So here's to the kids who deal with anxiety and panic attacks. Here's to the kids who are bullied and abused. Here's to the kids who struggle with depression. Here's to the kids who hate their body, the kids who self harm, the kids with addictions, the kids with PTSD, the kids with eating disorders and all others who struggle just to make it through the day. There are people who want to help you. Reach out to them. But most of all hear these words, and believe in them the way that I believe in you: You are so loved. You have worth. You matter. You have a purpose. You are gifted. You are a gift. You are needed. You can win your battles and overcome your demons. You. Are. Not. Alone. And lastly: I am rooting for you.

Stay sick as frick friends.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
