More and more reports of blue- green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, seem to be appearing in various lakes in New York State. Lakes, such as Seneca, Cayuga, and Oneida, have recently been confirmed to have the toxic algae. Even though Blue- green algae is very beneficial in medicinal capsules, it is very toxic when exposed to. Both humans and animals can become quite ill if they come in contact with the algal blooms. The alarming number of algae blooms is supposedly caused by the increase of phosphorus and nitrogen in the water, which are important nutrients to the algae. Many locals are saying that the rise in agricultural run off from farms and fertilized is the cause of the lake pollution.
As of August 4th, 2017 it has been reported that the blue- green algae was visually detected on various parts of Keuka Lake. Dr. Tim Sellers, a professor of biology and environmental science at Keuka College, collected samples of algae on Keuka Lake to be tested. The results at the current moment have not come back yet. However, everyone should be informed of the possible risks, and be able to recognize the algae just in case they come in contact with it. The blue-green algae can create various colored scum on top of the water that should be avoided at all costs. It has been known to look like streaks, spilled paint, "pea soup", or little floating dots.
Indian Pines Park and Red Jacket Park in Penn Yan have closed their swimming areas off to due to the discovery of the algae. I am hoping that the algae did not spread to Point Nemo at the Keuka College Lake front. This is hard for travelers, especially who come to Keuka Lake to enjoy the lake. However, please stay safe, and if you notice anything please do not hesitate to seek assistance. The toxins from the algae blooms can cause an allergic reaction, irritation, vomiting, nausea, or difficulty breathing. Also, please make sure to keep an eye on your dogs as well because the toxins released can damage their livers and nervous system. Do not use any surface water either because boiling, chlorination, and filter systems do not get rid of the toxins created by the algae. Again, if you notice any symptoms of exposure do occur from using water at camp or home, seek medical attention immediately.
