With the arrival of fall, another exciting season begins: Oscar season! And what excellent timing, considering that the Toronto International Film Festival is currently in motion. Soon, they will announce the winners, and if some past years have indicated, the People's Choice Award winner will go on to be a big Oscar film. However, we're gonna look at the other side of the coin: blockbusters. Here are a few potential winners and losers in the months to come:
WINNERS
Moana: The latest in the Disney pantheon has the makings of a new classic: the story of a female character (this time, she's from the Pacific Islands) who does battle against an evil villain, the potential destruction of ther way of life, and sexism. The new trailer puts all of these things into view. That said, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and newcomer Auli'i Cravalho are engaging voice actors already, and it's Disney, so it'll likely be a success either way. Plus, the animation is GORGEOUS!
Doctor Strange: Despite the movie getting into controversy because it's another film where a white actor plays a non-white role, the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe should prove interesting. If you haven't seen one of the trailers, here's one of them. With Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange, this should prove to be a fruitful new thread for Marvel to expand.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: There's no The Boy Who Lived, no He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, not even the famous School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but just looking at the trailer alone proves that this is a Harry Potter movie. A Harry Potter story without Harry seems curious, but Eddie Radmayne is undeniably charismatic, and the myriad of fans probably will see this no matter what.
LOSERS
My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Legend of Everfree: While there's even an entire Tumblr page devoted to MLP, this film might test the limits of even the devotees.
Trolls: The incessantly upbeat chart-topper by Justin Timberlake aside, it can be hard to figure out why exactly this movie was made.
Assassin's Creed: Since this critic doesn't play the game series, it's hard to say if it's faithful based on the trailer. However, despite that films based on video games can be commercial successes (even though that one had controversy as well), it's best to not get hopes too high.
I could go on about other big movies. I predict there will be entire pieces devoted to the newest Star Wars film, but that time shall come when it does. In the meantime, I'll see you at the movies!
