Don’t ever take anything for granted.

All too often in our society it is easy to damn the world, government, ect. For things that we do not possess before stepping back and realizing all that we have. Being able to wake up in the morning in a sheltered environment, with food within reach, and not dying from a preventable disease…. Most people in America can say that they are part of the people I just listed off (I know I am.) Yet still, we wake up and realize we have a zit on our chin, or dark bags under our eyes and curse the world over because “it’s out to get us.”

Even if the blessings you possess aren’t in the form that you had imagined they’d be, they’re still there. Maybe your family (your real true family, the people that are always there for you) are not blood. Maybe your house isn’t as big as the house next door, or maybe it isn’t even the biggest in town. Maybe your clothes come from a second hand store rather than the new hip place that just opened up in the mall. Maybe you’re a little too skinny, or a little obese, or have a big nose, or whatever it may be that is preventing you from seeing your blessings, CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE! Perspective is everything in this life and all too often we (as humans) fail to realize the power that we possess. And it’s hard. I fail daily to realize the power I possess when realizing that I do have a honkin’ zit on my face, or my hair is way too frizzy to put up and I don’t have enough time to fix it. Because in this life it’s hard to realize the blessings that have been placed in our lives when we don’t have anything to compare it to. The child that grew up in the million dollar mansion isn’t going to think “I am so blessed” because that’s all he has known. To him that is normal while a large majority of the world is dreaming to be living that child’s reality.

However, while you sit in your home (whatever size or class you may classify under) know that there is someone out there searching and hoping, and struggling to have your reality. Or maybe you’re that person. Be thankful that you have the opportunity to make an effort into going after your dreams. There are children being sold into slavery or sex trafficking, or being drugged and forced into life styles they have not chosen for themselves. There are people that messed up young in life and now cannot get a job and are homeless because of it. There are vets that served our country and suffer from PTSD and now are sitting on the corner by your local grocery store. There are so many people that have suffered and tried, and cannot obtain the reality in which you live. And as I believe every individual can help in some way to make someone else’s future brighter, and urge you to realize your blessing too and to love yourself, despite your weight or hair or imperfect skin. YOU are beautiful. YOU are blessed. And I urge you to thank God (whatever that may mean to you) everyday that you can live another day to chase your dreams. And DO NOT GIVE UP. You have the opportunity to chase your dreams while someone else doesn’t and that is enough proof that you should be doing exactly what you feel passionate towards.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
