While searching for a roommate to live with at Virginia Tech, the number one question that was asked was
"Where are you from?"
My go-to response was always:
"Christiansburg, a town right next to Blacksburg."
It doesn't surprise me when people tell me that they have never heard of this town. Those from Christiansburg often use Virginia Tech to describe our town's location.
Based on the 2016 Census, Christiansburg's population is 22,088. This is about half that of Blacksburg's population of 45,038. Say what you will about Christiansburg, but this small, unknown town has character. There are a number of locally owned restaurants and businesses that are often a go-to hangout for college students and those native to Blacksburg. Here are some popular places to visit while in C-Burg...
Gardner's Frozen Treats and Grill
I may be a little biased, considering I work there, or come and try it out yourself! Gardner's makes their own Italian ice and several different homemade ice creams like Double Stuff Oreo and Blueberry Lavender (trust me on this one). The Grill is located in the back, complete with a patio and a pool table. Their Latin Corner has some good eats and I would highly recommend trying the Original Cheesesteak.
El Gran Rodeo
Probably the best Mexican Restaurant in the NRV (in my opinion). Their queso is amazing and you could probably make a meal out of the chips and well-known white sauce they provide.
The New River Valley Mall
If you aren't looking to drive 45 minutes to Valley View Mall in Roanoke, the New River Valley Mall is the place to go. The only downside is the limited number of stores but there is Dick's Sporting Goods, Victoria Secret, American Eagle, and Belk.
Starlite Drive In
The Starlite Drive In is perfect for date nights during the summer. Bring a blanket, some pillows, and whatever food you would like. Also, try Dude's Burgers while you're there!
Christiansburg also has Chik-fil-a, Dairy Queen, and several other dining/hangout spots not available in Blacksburg. Christiansburg is also No. 2 in one of the safest towns to live in Virginia as reported by CreditDonkey. And don't forget about those sunsets: the kind that EVERYONE posts on their Snapchat stories.
So, the next time you happen to be in the NRV, stop by Christiansburg and try some homemade ice-cream, catch a movie without having to leave your car, or come antiquing in the downtown area! There is something for everyone!
C-what! C-BURG!!!
