Our Black is Beautiful, Our Black is Strong, Our Black is Courageous, Our Black is Sexy, Our Black is Magical. #BlackGirlMagic is currently trending again on social media, and it is a trend that is not to be denied. Created by CaShawn Thompson, the movement celebrates the resilience, power, and beauty of Black women. Our magic can be found dominating the tennis court, basketball arenas, politics, fashion, businesses/entrepreneurship, and currently, the Olympics. The 2016 summer Olympics in Rio has already begun, and there are a few Black women we should look out for.
1. Lia Neal
Lia is a 21-year-old Brooklynite who's currently attending Stanford University. She made her debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she won a Bronze medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. She will compete in the same event this year.
2. Simone Manuel
Simone is 20 years old and from Sugar Land, Texas. She is currently attending Sanford University. She will be competing in the Women's 100 meter freestyle Heat on Aug. 10, the Women's 50 meter freestyle Heat on Aug. 12, and the Women's 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay.
3. Ashleigh Johnson
Ashleigh is a 21-year-old water polo player representing the United States. She was part of the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, where her team won the gold medal. Look out for her and the American team when they face Spain on Aug. 9, China on Aug. 11, and Hungary on Aug. 13 at the Olympics.
4. Gabby Douglas
20-year-old Gabby is the returning champ of the United States Gymnastics team. In 2012 Olympics, she became the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions. She returns to Rio to participate in the Women's uneven bars, Women's floor exercise, Women's beam, Women's vault, and the Women's team all-around.
5. Simone Biles
Known as "The Flyer," Simone Biles is 19 years old. She is the first gymnast to win the all-around title at three consecutive World Championships and is the first African-American gymnast to be an all-around world champion. Her signature move, "The Biles," will be on display in Rio. She will participate in the Women's uneven bars, Women's floor exercise, Women's beam, Women's vault, and the Women's team all-around.
6. Jenny Arthur
The 22-year-old American Weightlifter debuts at the Rio Olympics on Aug. 12 in the Weightlifting Women's 75 kg competition.
7. Venus and Serena Williams
The sisters unite and return as the defending champs in Rio, looking for a third consecutive gold in doubles competition. Serena will also look to retain her singles title.
8. Jessica Ennis-Hill
Jessica will be representing Great Britain in Track & Field during the Heptathlon competition on Aug. 12 at the Olympics.
9. Yarisley Silva
Yarisley stands at 5 feet 2 inches and will represent Cuba at the Rio Olympics in the Pole Vault competition on Aug. 16.
10. Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce
The Jamaican-born sprinter has won four Olympic medals thus far and will compete in the Women's 100 meter Track & Field competition on Aug. 12, along with the Women's 4 x 100 meter relay competition on Aug. 18.
