Biracial rapper, Logic just released the music video for “Black SpiderMan,” the second single from his upcoming LP, “Everybody.” Logic does not disappoint with lyrics, the message, or the video itself. I found myself wishing that I was in the video. (It’s not just because I love Spider-Man.) I have always respected Logic’s vision and personally where I think Logic lacks in lyrical prowess, he makes up for in unique concepts. However, you can tell that on this next project, Logic will be coming at us with material that is both lyrical and creative. All that aside, let’s talk about what makes this song and this music video work so well.
For starters, this video unfolds perfectly. From the beginning you want more, but you also want to focus on what’s happening right in the moment. There is never a time where I got bored; which is hard to say for most music videos these days. Every single frame is carefully crafted and as the music video progresses, it adds more and more components to gawk at and admire. The timing is impeccable.
This music video seems like a musical number. There are large ensembles and they all work together to paint a larger picture. My personal favorite segment is the end, where Logic leads a group of random people in a choreographed dance number. Everyone dances in unison, yet everyone has their own unique style. I feel that the reason for this is to show that no matter what, at the end of the day, every human being just wants to have fun. Logic brought all those people together to send a message to everyone in the world who wants to divide because of our differences. Logic shows that it is possible to have differences (and respect them), but still get along and have fun.
The music video also features amazing cinematography. I am always one to admire cinematography. Furthermore, everyone in the video has a purpose and a motivation. I feel that many music videos feature the artist and anyone else in the video just standing around trying to look cool. Everyone in “Black SpiderMan,” are aiming to have a good time, and they throw all their inhibitions out of the window as they do it. So, hats off to Andy Hines and everyone else who worked hard on this amazing music video.
Short story, I like it. Long story, I think Logic has struck gold by deciding to rap about his race and his treatment from both the black and the white community, in his next album “Everybody.” When I first heard about the concept for this album, I was nervous because I figured it would just be an All Lives Matter protest on wax, but I feel that Logic is not going in that direction. In fact, he states, “Black Lives Matter” multiple times on this song. Furthermore, he addresses white people who are still not accepting people of color in 2017. This video reflects Logic’s creativity and the song is a very refreshing perspective on the race issue in America.
