This past Sunday at the Golden Globe awards, the majority of the attendees arrived in all black to create a sense of community and speak out against sexual misconduct in Hollywood. Lately, numerous scandals have surfaced, coming directly out of Hollywood regarding sexual abuse against women that have been covered for years.
The fact that these women felt that the only approach was staying silent and internally dealing with the pain that their abusers caused is devastating. Just like many of the men stated through a symbolic pin on their tuxedos, time's up.
Finally, the voices and important figures of Hollywood came together at the award show that kicks off the season to show that they stand together against sexual abuse, inequality, mistreatment, and to support the women who have been affected. Not only did they look united, but they were able to send a message worldwide that impacted viewers everywhere.
As an avid viewer of all the award shows that are broadcast-ed during this time of the year, I thought that the Hollywood community could not have picked a better time to speak out. It is a new year and it is time that everyone pay closer attention to the mistreatment that is happening everyday in the workplace. We can no longer let the people who have been affected and damaged feel alone. Since celebrities are constantly in the public eye, having them stand up and show people that it is okay to speak out and fight for what you believe in will be the motivation that other victims need to overcome what they have been through.
Time is up. It is time to stand together as a society against people who have been abused. It is time to raise awareness and fight to stop the events that have been revealed in the past year and hidden for an absurd amount of time. It is time to make a change, and Hollywood could not have kick started it any better than in all black on the red carpet.
