America is the land of the free, but as Blacks exercise their freedom, there seems to be repercussions. Two Black men have lost their lives at the hands of police in one week. The deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile have stirred unrest about the narrative of police brutality and racism. #Black Lives Matter protests have intensified all over the U.S.

This was a sad week for America, with two men losing their lives and five policemen losing their lives during a protest in Dallas, Texas. Black lives are at risk, hence the hashtag BlackLivesMatter. The lives of the police officers that were taken were unjustifiable because their lives mattered also. People are frustrated and tensions are high, so these organized protests are needed in order to help us survive, but that’s not all we should be doing. Before we get to the Trumps and Hillarys, we need to focus on our local assemblymen and women that we vote into office. We also need to be unified and invest in Black-owned businesses because our capital is important and where and how we spend it is very significant. So, as we continue to shut down highways and make our voices heard, here are some Black-owned businesses we can invest in.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
