Black ice cream has become the recent trend in New York at a place called Morgenstern's Finest Ice Cream, and it's good for you. Yes, you read it right. Ice cream can be good for you. More specifically if it's black ice cream.
The owner of Morgenstern's Finest Ice Cream, Nick Morgenstern, has revealed that the flavor and color of this popular ice cream choice is charcoal, or better known as coconut ash. Coconut ash has been used quite recently to flavor many other products such as juices, toothpaste, pizza, and cocktails. Morgenstern was intrigued by coconut ash and was already wanting to add a coconut flavor on the menu, so he took a chance on this interesting ingredient.
Warning: This ice cream will temporarily dye your tongue and mouth black, but if you like the following ingredients it probably will not be a problem. Coconut ash contains coconut flakes, coconut cream, coconut milk, and of course charcoal. Unbeknownst to me, charcoal has some positive effects on the human body. Charcoal is used for detox, food poisoning, and even for drug overdoses. However, if you do decide to try coconut ash keep in mind that just because some people have positive effects from charcoal doesn't mean that it is all good for you. There have not been enough studies shown that charcoal can rid your body of all the bad toxins it contains. Basically, charcoal being good or bad for your body is up in the air until there is more evidence that proves it otherwise. Another downside to this new flavor is the fact that you have to pay almost 10 dollars.
Here are some reviews from customers on Yelp that have tried coconut ash so you can determine if this is something you are willing to try.
"I like the coconut ash(black), but the burnt hazelnut and the sweet potatoes are seriously too much. If I remember correctly, one scope $4, 2 for $6 and 3 for $8. Topping 50cents per."
"This time around I had to try the Coconut Ash and I paired it with a Coconut Related. This was a pretty decent combo - DOUBLE the coconut! The Coconut Ash was legit - there were little pieces of coconut within the ice cream as well - definitely added a bit of texture. This was super messy to eat though... ice cream melting everywhere! I also thought the price was OKAY - my total came out to $7.06 for two scoops on a regular cone."
So there you have it. If you like coconut and do not mind the black stained lips then this is something you should give a chance. If you end up not liking it, no harm no foul.
