From Miss USA to the hashtag #BlackGirlsBreakTheInternet, you got to admit that black girls have been recently taking over, and it's a beautiful thing.
With all the recent news stories on the seemingly always downtrodden race and the creation of an entire movement (BLM), black people as a whole are learning to love themselves more for all that they are and all that they can accomplish, and not for what people might see them as. Melanin' poppin' and all, stereotypes are being beaten every day to prove that the black race is nothing short of amazing. Women in specific have made major headlines and continue to dominate in the health field, education field and the entire country period. When they crowned the absolutely stunning Deshauna Barber as Miss USA, black girls around the world shed tears of joy and excitement with her. As somewhat of a reminder, black girls didn't have to feel like they had to be named Ashley or Courtney to win a nationally recognized award. Black girl magic again at its finest! Don't get me wrong, I think women of all races are beautiful and are amazing, but this article is to only focus on a certain type because I felt that maybe some little black girl reading this may not love the skin they are in and just need a gentle reminder that they are gorgeous because too often do I hear, "you're pretty for a black girl."
Black women are building foundations and are the stepping stones to a future of unlimited possibilities. Women of empowerment such as our beautiful First Lady, Amandla Stenberg Zendaya, Keri Washington, Beyonce, Oprah and Ursula Burns are breaking down walls and defying whatever stereotype is thrown at them. Or 11-year-old Mikaila Ulmer, who at an even younger age started her own lemonade company, appeared on shark tank and has been named one of the top 10 innovators of the year for her product Bee's Lemonade. Black girls are forever winning.
Completely smashing the ignorant thoughts that you have to be "light-skinned" to be considered beautiful or mixed with another race, rather than further the divide, black women have come together to say that not just a specific shade is radiant, that all shades are beautiful. I've never seen such an abundance of love in the entirety of my years on this Earth. Unity is what drives us, what pushes us to do more.
We are often harshly criticized by our own race as well. Too often black men only see black women by their ability to "stay down" for a black man, or how to uplift our "kings." When in reality this only adds to the problem because we are so much more than that. We are not defined by how we love. We are passionate, versatile, ingenious, loving, courageous, spiritual, radiant, graceful. We are queens and we are full of black girl magic. So love your curls, love yourself, use plenty of coconut oil, and always keep your melanin' poppin' because us black girls rock.
Sincerely,
A magical black girl
